Title I : FAQ

What is Title I?

Title I is a federal program under No Child Left Behind that provides supplementary funding to improve academic achievement.  The focus is closing the achievement gap between the “high and low performing” children, especially the social economically disadvantaged children. Schools are provided Title I supplementary funding based upon the percentage of students in their attendance area who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Lone Star's Title I Reading Clinic is NOT a Special Education program.  It is for students in grades K-3 who are reading slightly below grade level and may need extra help.  Various learning materials and methods of instruction are used to meet curricular goals and the rigid state requirements in Language Arts.

Title I instruction encompasses the essential components (building blocks) of reading:

·         Phonics

·         Phonemic awareness

·         Vocabulary development

·         Reading fluency

·         Reading comprehension strategies
